I am a big fan of the Indians. Yet I also recognized that this season was, as they say, pure unadulterated luck and will probably not be repeated again next year. Terry Pluto has a great idea for how to make me wrong.
Asdrubal Cabrera is a better than average hitter who plays a skill position relatively well. If it sounds like I’m damning with faint praise, I’m not. That’s a pretty darn valuable commodity. This year he had a slightly below average offense year — 98 OPS+ — but he’s a good bet to get better next year.
That makes him a great player to trade. Why? Francisco Lindor is one excellent reason. A second excellent reason is that he’s going to be getting awfully expensive awfully soon. A third excellent season is that Asdrubal Cabrera is really a second baseman, but Jason Kipnis is blocking him there.
Yet he’s likely to be a good investment, if you do need a second baseman, and a lot of baseball teams do. I’m sure he’ll get seven figures a year (how could he not?), but you’re also getting his prime years.
I am interested to see if this idea actually turns into a trade.
