Ranking Rockstar, #5.5: Max Payne

Filed under: Our Favorites, Video Games — Tony Demchak @ 5:59 am

I never said it was a top ten list, but I committed to a top ten list while realizing I actually have eleven games to rank. Max Payne was technically only published by Rockstar, so I feel I’m justified in cheating here. This one actually turned into a surprisingly decent movie, which has that going for it.

Max Payne is a love letter to film noir. Bullet Time, the ability to slow down time and shoot people, would eventually make it into a far more successful and awesome game, but this was pretty solid.

Why it’s here: An original story, and really the beginning of the darker tone that Rockstar games would eventually take.

Why it’s not higher: Very linear, very shallow, and the damn baby crying levels made me nearly insane.
