Carlos Santana: 3B machine (but without the sweet guitar solos)

Filed under: Sports — Tony Demchak @ 9:50 am

Fangraphs breaks down previous C-to-3B experiments here. I like the idea, although I’m not sure what it means for Lonnie Chisenhall. It isn’t that Chisenhall is a bad player, or even a bad 3B. His problem is that he’s got pretty good power, but doesn’t make contact all that often and doesn’t walk. In the minors he was much better, so it’s not as though it’s unrealistic to expect a leap forward at the tender age of 24. He does have a pretty extreme platoon split.

The idea is, allegedly, to make Santana an unholy sort of utility player — with time behind the plate, 1B, 3B, and DH. I love this idea, and not just because Yan Gomes is awesome. A good defender and a great hitter, who also stole 2 bases without getting caught? What’s not to love?

I’d better quit now, lest I become dangerously optimistic about a Cleveland sports franchise. I’ll read some reports on the Browns: that should cool things off.
