Oh, Choo, I remember when you were an Indian. Rob Neyer has a great article about how that came to be (how do you like Ben Broussard and Eduardo Perez now, Seattle?) Well, now he’s a Texas Ranger for an obscene amount of money.
Shin-Soo Choo is a really, really good outfielder. He’s got a great arm, gets on base, occasionally hits for power. He’s got a career OPS+ of 134. He’s also an indifferent baserunner and his range is merely okay. Oh yeah, and he’s 31.
7 years/$130 million seems excessive, in that respect. He’s got “old player’s skills”, and he won’t age well. I just don’t think this contract will be all that great for Texas. He fits beautifully on that team, and I want to see him do well, but I think this will end up biting Texas on the ass.
