Epic fail, Hollywood

Filed under: Television and/or Movies — Tony Demchak @ 9:01 am

My recent purchase of “Master of Puppets” and “Ride the Lightning” by Metallica (along with my lifelong love of, well, Lovecraft) has once again reminded me that one of America’s great authors has been entirely fucked in the ass by Hollywood: there are exactly 0 quality films made based on Lovecraft’s stories.

The silent film “Call of Cthulhu” (2005) was decent until the stop-motion Cthulhu. Everything else has been campy horror. I’d love to see Guillermo del Toro get his hands on one of the films; if anybody could do cosmic horror, it would be him. And, for G_d’s sake, no gore. I get that gore sells, but it’s not really part of what makes Lovecraft work.

All I want is one big budget attempt; if it fails, I will readily concede that Lovecraft is one of those authors who just won’t translate well to the big screen. But to my knowledge, nobody has even tried.
